Gestational diabetes is a temporary form of diabetes
Gestational diabetes is a temporary form of diabetes that occurs during pregnancy, and is usually diagnosed in the second and third trimesters. It occurs when the natural hormones secreted by the placenta during pregnancy cause an increase in the body's resistance to insulin. The expectant mother's cell are not responding normally to insulin. The body now needs much more insulin than usual to carry out insulin's job of helping body cells and muscles take up glucose staying in the bloodstream after each meals. The results in glucose staying in the bloodstream hence the high glucose reading in the blood test.

Some factors that contributes to increased risk of gestational diabetes are being over weight, family history of type 2 diabetes in a previous pregnancy, having had difficulty carrying a pregnancy to full term and women who is above the age of thirty.

Others factors that contributes to gestational diabetes are excessive fatigue, being thirsty all the time and increased urination. It is important for you to have your pregnancy test. It is usually performed using oral glucose to achieve a diagosis.
